Air Filter Issues

When you leave an air filter in the furnace too long, it fills up and your furnace has to work extra hard to get the air it needs. This can cause it to work too hard. Some units will shut off when they have to work so hard, while others will break down. If your furnace won’t start, try changing the air filter and see if that helps.

Your Pilot Light Went Out

Check for a blue flame near the bottom of your furnace, or wherever the pilot light is located on your unit. Without this, your furnace won’t turn on. If it’s out, relight it if you know how or call us for help.

The Gas Supply is Too Low

Make sure your gas supply is turned all the way on. Your furnace can’t work without this. Some homeowners think it’s safer to turn this part of the way off, but this only ends with your furnace not working. It should be all the way on or all the way off.

The Thermostat Got Reset

Make sure your thermostat is set where you want it to be. If it got bumped, it could be the reason why your furnace won’t turn on. You’d be surprised how often we diagnose this as the problem behind a furnace breakdown.

What is Plumber’s Putty?

Plumber’s putty is a white, soft substance that creates a watertight seal around sinks and faucets, between pipes, and other places in your plumbing system. It’s easy to use and can be a quick solution to some plumbing problems.

What is Plumber’s Putty Used For?

While many a plumber has turned to caulk for most sealing needs, plumber’s putty still has a place. It is not an adhesive, so it creates a seal without sticking. If you may need to remove the seal later, plumber’s putty is a great choice.

You’ll also never have to ask, “How long for plumber’s putty to dry?” because it’s supposed to stay soft. This makes it useful in places where drying caulk would not be appropriate.

How to Use Plumber’s Putty

Here’s how to apply plumber’s putty:

  1. Take a small piece of putty and roll it into a ball in your fingers.
  2. Roll the putty into a cord or a rope.
  3. Put one piece of whatever you’re sealing in place.
  4. Lay the plumber’s putty where the seal will be.
  5. Place the other piece of whatever you’re sealing in place. Let it push and squash the putty until everything fits.

Now you have your seal! You may want to test your seal before you trust it, though plumber’s putty has a long history of getting the job done the first time!
